What is the purpose of Southeast Tech CIS Internship Program?
Internships provide students with hands-on experience in their chosen field of study. Internships provide businesses the opportunity to contribute to the students' professional development and to fill part-time positions requiring computer information systems skills.
What is the purpose of having the student contact the businesses?
To discuss the possibility of the company providing an internship site for a student majoring in Computer Programming or Internet Development at Southeast Technical Institute. The student is essentially serving as a spokesperson for STI in seeking an internship opportunity. This initial contact does not obligate the potential internship site in any way. As part of the internship process, each student must contact businesses and present the STI Internship Program to a company representative who has the authority to hire and/or recommend an intern. By agreeing to be interviewed, the company is helping the student to meet one of the course requirements.
Can the business select the intern?
Yes! After agreeing to work with an intern, the student making the contact will provide their resume, cover letter, and list of references. In the event that this student is not selected, the STI Computer Information Systems advisor will forwad to the company the resumes, cover letters, and references from other department-approved students interested in pursuing an internship. The company representative has the opportunity to review these documents and interview candidates who fit your needs and company mission. If a satisfactory candidate cannot be provided by STI, the company is in no way obligated to hire an intern from STI.
In general, sites which offer a paid internship are likely to have more applicants than unpaid sites. Students typically cannot remain in their current job and pursue a successful internship. On occasion, facilities can only offer unpaid internships. Although they may have fewer applicants, we have placed a few students in unpaid internships. Recently, interns have typically been paid $9-$11 per hour.
